On March 4, 2025, Paul Akeo, a 58-year-old Navy veteran, and his wife Christy, 60, were taken into custody shortly after their plane landed in Cancun, Mexico1. The couple’s arrest stemmed from accusations by prosecutors in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo that they had defrauded a hospitality company1. Specifically, the prosecutors alleged that in 2022, the Akeos had canceled 13 credit card payments to a hotel chain, totaling more than $116,5002. This unexpected detainment occurred at the beginning of what was supposed to be a vacation for the Michigan couple, turning their trip into a month-long ordeal in a maximum-security prison
